Getting the Most from 0.3mm Sheets
Handling ultra-thin foam requires a few tricks. Here's how to score, bend, and laminate without tearing — and why a fresh blade makes all the difference.
Cutting
A fresh #11 blade every 2 m of cut is the rule. A dull blade tears 0.3 mm sheets along the fibre and the cut goes ragged immediately. Drag — don't push.
For straight lines, use a steel rule and score-and-snap. For curves, two passes: a light scoring pass first, then through.
Bending
Score the inside of the bend with the back of a butter knife. The skin keeps its integrity; the foam crushes locally. You can pull a 90° leading-edge bend in 0.3 mm without a hint of tear.
Laminating
3M 77 spray adhesive at the recommended distance, two light coats per surface, 30 seconds tack time. UHU Por for permanent joints — wait the full minute before mating.
What to avoid
- Hot glue (melts the foam instantly)
- Solvent CA without an accelerator (etches a haze)
- Heavy paint — even a light Tamiya coat doubles a panel's weight
